My craving for sweets is still going
strong. Hence I am always on the lookout for desserts, halwas and barfis. Maybe
it is appropriate given the festive mood.
When I went to the market last week, I saw lots of dudhis (bottle gourd)
being sold. I wasn’t sure about the
dishes one can prepare with this vegetable. In fact I did not know what its Konkani
name was. I still bought it hoping to
figure it out later. When I checked with my mom and mom –in – law, they told me
it is called ‘gardudhe’ and suggested that I make halwa out of it. That’s exactly
what I needed, given the sweet mood I am in these days.
Dudhi Halwa is made in much the
same way as carrot halwa. It is easy to
make and very good for health. Dudhi is low in fat and cholesterol and high in fiber. It has 95% water content on account of which
it has a very cooling effect on the body.
Dudhi juice also helps in curing urinary infection, indigestions and
ulcers. (Ref : http://www.tips4.net/2008/11/health-benefits-of-bottle-gourd-lauki.html)
